Damage Resist

Damage Resist cuts a percentage off the damage you take. It always works, on every hit - but it can only cut so much. If a boss hits you for many times your max HP, a percentage cut is not enough to save you. This page shows exactly how a hit is calculated, so you can see when Damage Resist helps and when it does not.

Where it comes from

TotalAll sources added up, max 90%

Type @stats in-game to see your total.

The two caps: 75% and 90%

Type of hitResist usedExample
Normal monster attacks (touch, physical and magic attacks)Your resist, max 75%With 90% resist, a normal hit is still only cut by 75%
Bombs that deal a % of your max HP (e.g. the falling bombs at Lotus and Damien)Your full resist, max 90%A bomb for 100% of your max HP kills you without resist, but only takes 10% with 90% resist

So anything above 75% only helps against bombs.

How a monster hit is calculated

Step 1 - Level penalty. If the monster is higher level than your Total Level, its attack is multiplied:

penalty = ( (monster level / your Total Level - 1) x 10 + 1 ) ^ 2.75     (never below 1)
attack = monster attack x penalty (max 99,999,999)

This grows very fast: a boss just 10% above your level hits about 7 times harder, 20% above about 20 times harder.

Boss level vs. your Total LevelExampleIts hits are multiplied by
Same level or lowerBoss 10,000 vs. you 10,000x1.0
2% higherBoss 10,200 vs. you 10,000x1.7
5% higherBoss 10,500 vs. you 10,000x3.0
10% higherBoss 11,000 vs. you 10,000x6.7
20% higherBoss 12,000 vs. you 10,000x21
30% higherBoss 13,000 vs. you 10,000x45
50% higherBoss 15,000 vs. you 10,000x138

Step 2 - Defense. Your Weapon DEF (physical hits) or Magic DEF (magic hits) lowers the hit:

defense factor = attack / your DEF (kept between 0.1 and 1)
hit = attack x defense factor

DEF only starts to help once it is higher than the boss's attack. Double the attack halves the hit, and so on, down to a 90% cut at 10 times the attack. For reference: geared players have about 60 to 120 million Weapon/Magic DEF from their equipment (before % DEF bonuses).

Examples - a boss at the max attack of 100,000,000, you at 9,999,999 max HP:

Your DEFHit before resistWith 40% resistWith 75% resist
50,000,000100,000,00060,000,000 - one-shot25,000,000 - one-shot
100,000,000100,000,00060,000,000 - one-shot25,000,000 - one-shot
150,000,00066,666,66740,000,000 - one-shot16,666,667 - one-shot
200,000,00050,000,00030,000,000 - one-shot12,500,000 - one-shot
300,000,00033,333,33320,000,000 - one-shot8,333,333 - you survive
400,000,00025,000,00015,000,000 - one-shot6,250,000 - you survive
1,000,000,00010,000,0006,000,000 - you survive2,500,000 - you survive

So at the max attack you need about 250 million DEF together with 75% resist to survive - neither one is enough alone. A boss with a lower attack (because you are closer to its level) needs much less DEF.

Step 3 - Damage Resist.

final hit = hit x (1 - resist) (resist max 75% here)

Then there is a small random spread (95% to 105%), and after that dodge, Meso Guard, shields and similar skills.

Why you still get one-shot

The number you see above your head is the hit after Damage Resist. Max HP is 9,999,999. With 75% resist, a hit must be under about 40,000,000 before resist for you to survive it (40M x 0.25 = 10M).

Example: a boss at the max attack of 99,999,999 hits you, and your DEF is too low to lower it. 75% resist cuts it to ~25,000,000. That is still 2.5 times your max HP - you die, even though resist did its job. Without resist it would have been 100,000,000.

In short: resist can survive a hit of up to ~4 times your max HP, never more. Is the boss hitting you for more? Then you need more Total Level (shrinks the level penalty, by far the strongest fix) or more DEF (see the DEF examples above) - not more resist. Check the Bosses page to see from which level each boss stops one-shotting you.

Real examples: our bosses

How hard our bosses hit once your Total Level has reached the boss's level, for a character with max HP (9,999,999). Below its level every boss hits much harder (see the level table above).

BossLevelHit without resistHit with 75% resistDo you need resist?
Lotus3,80039% of your HP10% of your HPNo - you survive anyway
Lucid7,500122% of your HP31% of your HPYes - it keeps you alive
Will8,200121% of your HP30% of your HPYes - it keeps you alive
Necro Lotus12,000221% of your HP55% of your HPYes - it keeps you alive
Evil Hilla13,000247% of your HP62% of your HPYes - it keeps you alive
Darknell14,000268% of your HP67% of your HPYes - it keeps you alive

Black Mage16,500360% of your HP90% of your HPYes - it keeps you alive
Chosen Seren18,500376% of your HP94% of your HPYes - it keeps you alive

Anything above 100% is a one-shot. Example: Lucid hits for about 122% of your HP without resist (dead) and 31% with it (alive). And at Total Level 10,000, Necro Lotus (level 12,000) still hits for about 11 times your HP with 75% resist - there only levels help.

Estimates, calibrated on real hits; your own DEF moves the numbers up or down (see the DEF table above). Bombs that deal a % of max HP are not included.

When Damage Resist is useful

  • Just before you outgrow a boss. When its hits are 1 to 4 times your max HP, resist is the difference between dying and living. It lets you tank a boss earlier than your level alone would.
  • Bombs that deal a % of your max HP. These ignore your level and DEF - only resist lowers them, up to 90%.
  • Hits that do not kill you anyway. You take up to 75% less damage, so you survive several hits in a row (before your lifesteal heals you back up) and damage over time.

When it is not worth buying

  • The boss is far above your level. When it is 20% or more above your level, its hits are many times your HP - no resist saves you. Level up first.
  • You only leech. If you stay out of the fight and get revived or heal up anyway, resist changes nothing.
  • You are already at 75% from gear and Link Skills, and the bosses you fight have no % max HP bombs. More resist does nothing against normal hits.

Tip: check your total with @stats before buying. Gear and Link Skills count too, so you may need fewer purchases than you think to reach 75%.
